Stephen Perkins is an artist and independent art historian specializing in alternative artists’ periodicals and printed matter. He curates his home-based gallery, Subspace, from his extensive archive of artists’ printed matter and prints. Perkins’ own art practice is focused on printed matter, and the thoughtful, idiosyncratic assemblages he creates from his archive are recognized as artworks in their own right. Over the past decade he has also been researching, collecting, and exhibiting artists’ accordion books, and maintains a blog dedicated to that project. From 2000-2015, Perkins directed the Lawton Gallery at UW-Green Bay, where he taught courses on gallery and museum practice in addition to curating and mounting exhibitions.
