Wisconsin Treasures Beneath Your Feet

Tuesday, April 8, 2025 - 6:00pm to 8:00pm

In this Wisconsin Academy talk, Wisconsin Treasures Beneath Your Feet, Dr. Hannah Wagie examined the life of silicon dioxide, the molecule that makes up the major component of sand and glass. This inorganic material comes alive once it is recognized as an overlooked gem (literally!). She took attendees on a tour from huge sand dunes to microscopic glass skeletons that inspire you to take a closer look at the world around you.

This free, hybrid event was hosted by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters in partnership with the Mead Public Library and Mead Public Library Foundation.

Prior to the talk, in-person guests were able to examine various samples of sand through microscopes. Online guests were able to join us for the presentation via Zoom, which was followed by a brief Q&A session.
