Wisconsin People & Ideas 2017 Fiction and Poetry Contest Reading

Watch the Wisconsin People & Ideas Fiction and Poetry Contest Reading at the 2017 Wisconsin Book Festival, featuring some of Wisconsin's best writers and poets. 2017 award-winning short story writers/readers are Bob Wake (Cambridge), Jeff Esterholm (Superior), and Anne Zindler (Waukesha); award-winning poets/readers are Nicholas Gulig (Ft. Atkinson), Hansa Kerman Pistotnik (Madison), and Georgia Ressmeyer (Sheboygan).

This reading was hosted by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters, with support from Wisconsin Public Radio, the Wisconsin Book Festival, and Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts. Jeff Esterholm’s short stories have previously appeared in Wisconsin Academy Review, the Akashic Books online flash fiction series Mondays Are Murder, Crime Factory, Flash Fiction Italia, Midwestern Gothic, REAL: Regarding Arts and Letters, Shotgun Honey, and Yellow Mama.

Nicholas Gulig is a Thai-American poet from Wisconsin. The author of North of OrderBook of Lake, and Orient, he currently works as an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and lives in Fort Atkinson with his wife and two daughters.

Hansa Kerman Pistotnik is a poet and photographer whose black-and-white Hancock High, Lake Shore Drive was printed in the 2017 Midwest Review. She is the second-place winner of the 2017 Wisconsin People & Ideas Poetry Contest.

Georgia Ressmeyer, a New York native, has lived happily in Wisconsin since 1974, first as an attorney, now as a poet. She is the third-place winner of the 2017 Wisconsin People & Ideas Poetry Contest.

From 2008 to 2021 Jason A. Smith was the associate director of the Wisconsin Academy and editor of its quarterly magazine of Wisconsin thought and culture, Wisconsin People & Ideas.

Bob Wake is a writer and small press publisher in Cambridge, Wisconsin. He is the first-place winner of the 2024 Wisconsin People & Ideas Fiction Contest, which he also won in 2017. His short stories have appeared in Madison Magazine, The Madison Review, Rosebud Magazine, and in Wisconsin People & Ideas.

Ann Zindler is a teacher of seventh-grade reading and writing. She has been a writer herself since the third grade, and is the third-place winner of the 2017 Wisconsin People & Ideas Fiction Contest. Zindler lives in Waukesha with her husband David, her two daughters, Josie and Isabelle, and the family dog, Oreo.
