Object as Muse and Material

An Artists' Conversation featuring Nirmal Raja and Millicent Kennedy
Thursday, October 17, 2024 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

Join the Wisconsin Academy staff and interdisciplinary artists Nirmal Raja and Millicent Kennedy for a captivating virtual artists' conversation, Object as Muse and Material, captured at James Watrous Gallery.

Raja and Kennedy are both fascinated by our emotional attachment to objects and the challenge of letting things go. Whether it’s a piece of family jewelry, a memento from a favorite time or place, or a well-loved tool, our material surroundings are imbued with meaning, memory, culture, and history.

Don’t miss this enriching dialogue between two remarkable artists as they offer insights into their studio practice and the importance of everyday objects in their work.

Millicent Kennedy’s (they/them) practice is interested in how we archive a physical world in flux. Through skills both laborious and ancient including book and box making, natural dye and hand stitching, Kennedy connects to the knowledge of generations of unknown hands who worked to hold their world together.

Nirmal Raja is an interdisciplinary artist whose artistic career thrived in Milwaukee for over 30 years. She lived in India, South Korea, and Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States in the 1990s. She holds a BA in English Literature from St. Francis College in Hyderabad, India; a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.
