The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters, in partnership with the Mead Public Library, invites you to explore how people across cultures have looked to the stars for direction, meaning, and a sense of home. The recording features Travis Novitsky, an Anishinaabe photographer and night-sky advocate from the Grand Portage Nation, alongside Robert Mathieu, Professor of Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Wisconsin Academy Fellow. Through story, imagery, and science, Novitsky and Mathieu explore how Indigenous star knowledge and modern astronomy have shaped human movement and a sense of belonging across time.
This event is part of the Finding Home series, a statewide initiative of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters that invites people across Wisconsin to explore what it means to find home. Public lectures, art exhibitions, workshops, magazine features, and local events bring people together to create shared understanding and common ground.
