Demitra Copoulos is an artist based in Milwaukee working primarily in mixed-media sculpture. In her studio practice, she focuses on the human form in its many facets, physical, psychological, and physiological. Copoulos finds inspiration in exploring ways to portray the dynamics of the human form, its vast emotional behavior, and how these impact society. Her life-sized, surrealist figures and large-scale installations of the 1990s were shown in New York, North Carolina, Miami, Memphis, Chicago, and throughout Wisconsin. Between 2014 and 2018, Copoulos founded and co-organized Temporary Resurfacing, an outdoor multi-media video and projection event in Milwaukee. This event activated two city blocks by transforming it into an installation of over 30 video artists, whose work was projected onto the surfaces of buildings, in storefronts, and in alleyways. As part of revitalization of a south-side Milwaukee neighborhood, Copoulos worked with the business community and local artists to convert a historic building into an artists’ live-work community called the Creative Cube.
