Since graduating from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1990, Barry Phipps has spent nearly three decades making art in the disciplines of music, fashion, and photography. After living in Chicago for more than twenty years, Phipps and his wife relocated to the comparatively small town of Iowa City. Over the next four years he took countless road trips and shot hundreds of rolls of film. Phipps’ Iowa landscape views are rooted in an appreciation of the layers of time that develop around the places he visits. His first published book of photographs, Between Gravity and What Cheer: Iowa Photographs, is available from The University of Iowa Press.
