He received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Washington in 2005, and was one of the first to complete the Interdisciplinary Concentration in Political Communication offered there. Mike's research focuses on how the context and content of political communication influences the quality of democratic deliberation, public opinion, and civic engagement. Some of his recent projects have explored how digital media and novel sources of political information like late-night comedy enable or constrain democratic citizenship.
