As a child, Sean Avery was a military brat who thought he was a Power Ranger and kicked his grandma (but that’s a story for another time). Today, Avery is a rapper, poet, First Wave Scholar (look it up), and senior studying English Creative Writing at the University of Madison–Wisconsin, by way of the Sun (b.k.a. the suburbs of Avondale, Arizona). His work embraces both his imagination and his journey towards defining his own Black Masculinity. Avery is the second-place winner of the 2015 Wisconsin People & Ideas Poetry Contest.
