2014 LEAD JUDGE MAX GARLAND
Max Garland of Eau Claire is the current Wisconsin Poet Laureate. A first generation college student, Garland left a ten-year career as a mail carrier to pursue his love of poetry. He earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa in 1989 and has been teaching since 1990; currently he is Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In his first poetry collection, The Postal Confessions, which earned the prestigious Juniper Prize for Poetry, Garland chronicles his years carrying the mail in a classic American voice, discovering deeply felt significance within everyday experiences often drawn from the lives of the folks who lived on his rural mail route. ABOUT THE POETRY CONTEST
Begun in 2002 and regularly garnering over 600 poems, this annual contest is one of the finest showcases for emerging and established poets. Wisconsin People & Ideas is the only quarterly magazine in the state that regularly highlights Wisconsin poets and poetry along with fiction and articles by and about Wisconsinites who make our state great. It's through submissions to our annual contest and membership in the Wisconsin Academy that we can continue to fund the magazine and related contests. Entry fees are applied toward paying the prizes and contest-related expenses. So, beyond your entry fee we ask that you please begin your subscription to Wisconsin People & Ideas by becoming a member of the Wisconsin Academy. As a member, you'll also receive a 20% discount on your submissions ($8 instead of $10 per submission of up to three poems) in addition to four issues of the best magazine of contemporary Wisconsin thought and culture.
