Join Wisconsin Academy staff at the James Watrous Gallery to celebrate the Forward Art Prize and the artists it has supported so far: 5 years, 10 winners, and 100k in awards! 5-10-100: Women Artists Forward will be on view from May 24, 2024 through August 4, 2024.

Remarks by guest curators Bird Ross and Brenda Baker begin at 6:00 pm.

Free and open to the public. Light refreshments available.

Jennifer Angus

Jennifer Angus is a professor in the Design Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin -Madison where she teaches textile design, specifically, everything to do with the dyeing and printing of cloth, including natural dyes. Brenda Baker

Brenda Baker is an artist, mother, and educator. Brenda earned an MFA from University of Wisconsin-Madison, a BA from DePaul University, and studied at both the Austro-American Institute in Vienna, Austria and Karl Marx University of Economics in Budapest, Hungary.

Adriana Barrios

Adriana Barrios is a queer, biracial, Latina artist who grew up on the coastal borderlands of San Diego, California. Barrios received her Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is an M.F.A. graduate from the UW-Madison.

Mary Bero

Born in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, Mary Bero received her B.S. from Stout State University in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Largely self-taught, Bero is known for her assertive, embroidered miniature portraits. Her works are often mixed-media assemblages that incorporate embroidery, fiber art, fabric, and painting.

Yeonhee Cheong

Yeonhee Cheong is a Madison, WI-based visual artist who explores the visual language of human bodies in society through various media, including painting, printmaking, and fiber art. Born in South Korea, she studied fashion design at Seoul National University and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Angelica Contreras

Angelica Contreras is a Latinx artist who explores the multi-layered relationships between identity, tradition, and popular culture. Her artwork has been shown in exhibitions in Mexico and the U.S.

Lilada Gee

Lilada Gee is an artist, muralist, healer, preacher, author and international inspirational speaker and podcast host. Lilada founded a nonprofit organization—Defending Black Girlhood—that specializes in advocating for Black girls being safe in their homes, schools and communities to live, learn, and be loved.

Dakota Mace

Dakota Mace (Diné) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on translating the language of Diné history and beliefs. Mace received her MA and MFA degrees in photography and textile design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her BFA in photography from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe.

Bird Ross

Bird Ross’ art practice revolves around an ongoing study of how divergent materials can be the perfect companions in resolving obstacles. Along with Brenda Baker, Bird founded the Women Artists Forward Fund and the Forward Art Prize in 2018.

Katherine Steichen Rosing

Katherine Steichen Rosing explores invisible forces in forests and watersheds through painting and immersive installations. She earned an MFA from Northern Illinois University, a BFA from the University of Colorado-Denver, and a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and abroad, including Tokyo, New York, and Chicago.

Alice Y Traore

Alice Y Traore is a local, self-taught watercolor artist. Much of her work represents the challenges and triumphs of Black women as she attempts to capture the spirit of liberation, rejuvenation, celebration and sometimes simply rest. Alice rediscovered art during a period of physical healing.

Babette Wainwright

Originally a painter, Babette Wainwright discovered the pleasure and power of expressing herself with clay, making sculptures which are informed both by her African roots, and by the work of the pre-Colombian people of Haiti, the Arawaks. In 2000, she earned an MFA in Ceramics at UW Madison.
